Inhaling Melquiades for long time. But have feeling about dset again. Started experiments years ago and abandoned. have full one stage 6e5p blocks all proper Melquiades way. except misplaced output trannys or maybe never had right ones. What Amorph...

So, it has been a while. I have DSET/Macondo in stereo now although there is still some work to do to finish it and tune it to the room. As discussed earlier in this thread I need a preamp with gain and the Placette is just not cutting it for me (n...
I think it takes around 60 seconds on my amps. I have 2 minutes delay for high voltage, so it all within the limit.
That is good to know Romy. It was quite frustrating when I tho...
Hi Romy,So, six channels are now operational in the first DSET. By up I mean the anode voltages on all tubes is about right and the currents are in the ballpark of where they need to be. I am yet to check the DC Offset so hope...

Ok, I connected the DH DSET channel into the main Melquiades amp driving the DHT from a separate transformer. Until the final transformers arrive I will be able to test and to measure DH circuit, perhaps finding better operation. I connected to the D...
I have begun to see a pattern of diminishing net returns with respect to the smaller SETs, to the point where I wonder if their "potential" can ever be practically realized as Music in Full Glory. Lastly, the choice of an ou...

I did not know that there are any modern V-FET designs. As I understand, the V-FET transistors were available in 1970-1980 and were not produced since there. From what I heard that the DIY people who try to do V-FET amps buy old Sony and Yamaha machi...

By 'lighter' I mean that the DHT amplifying stage subjectively has less inertia and is able to change direction more quickly. I suppose nimble might be a better word.
At the moment I usually do use the amplifier 'full range'. (My speakers will no...
It is in a way ridicules. For years people who build of use horn fight with honk in horn, particularly in midbass-upperbass-lowerMF horns. I built my midbass horns and it has no honk, I mean no honk ever of any kind. S...
I am glad that Fane “now found … that they have sufficient old stock of the 8 ohms or 16 ohms voice coils to”. Such a phenomenal discovery of the British archeologists. Can you ship them here in US, they can help us to fin...

This is kind of funny. I got another B2 amp a few days back. It was near new condition, at least inside. As I plug it to drive my ULF I felt that it produces some kind of strange bass. I did not like it at all and it was very different then what ...

Jessie, your post catches me thinking about multi-channel driver matching, as well. I am not familiar with the Fanes, but I wonder if simply throwing more power at them would make them nothing more than louder, so they would then "match" the res...

Yes, too low efficiency, even worse than Altec 515, (when loaded with small throat, in proper FLH, NOT A7 type "horn" which disqualified it also for my usage... I don't know how "colored" Tannoy would sound with properly designed...

That attic is a lot of space to perhaps return to a midbass horn, should you be so inclined. Is the IB ULF run from DSET or a separate amplifier?...
I am using sealed bass arrays of 3 per side. I have six 10" scanspeak woofers in total. I aim to operate them from 38hz to 160hz with qtc 0.707I also have a tapped horn that I am using with my current horn system. It is 244cm's h...

I see, this tri-way Quad system for sure shall be much different from regular Quas. I kind of even understand why you stay with open baffle bas to support the system’s bass. For sure it will not Bruckner-style pressurize a room as non-dipole bass wou...

Output transformer. Here is
what the thing become complicated. Of you drive ultra-low impedance with step
down transformer then your secondary turns will decrease. They primary will
have whatever they have for all cas...

Hi Romy,I am designing the power supply chassis for the DSET at the moment and hope that you can remember some things about how you managed the grounding. All power supply components up to but not including the filter caps for each power supply will b...

My DSET amplifiers are starting to go together (slowly).Bias string and bleeder relays/resistors...The remainder of the filter caps. The middle floor goes on and the filter cap for the First Stages (6E5P/6E6P).Then the OPT's go in place and the shel...

It looks like you will be building not DSET but a full range amp. You need to come up with the chassis design and it is a bit complicated possess. Do not be in hurry with this possess. You need to think about the location of the main elements on chas...

So, it will be a single-ended triode amp and in future possible DSET, right? YesOK, but you need to understand that you will pay the “minimum proximity” penalty for this. Yes, this is something Jeffery warned me about, "Romy has that vertical thing r...

The model here is not that of the audio industry but of contemporary art. You have spent years refining the physical instantiation of a compelling idea. A patron now wants a piece of it. You have a workshop of assistants to make it for...
The interesting thing about the Bottlehead people is that they are pretty good guys. "High and outside" is I think Paul Stubbelbine, who is an expert at mastering. He remastered my girlfriend's last album. I was very i...

Glad I could be some small catalyst in part of your "amazing audio feelings" Romy. The world suddenly looked different to me when my first-born came along and there was a sudden readjustment period where I began to consider the relative importance o...

I kind of feel that I am way off in my familiarity about what is going on with new audio products. My horizon is very restricted with my own needs and with my own interests. I am irregularly read audio publications and irregularly visit some audio si...
If I were you then I would not pursue for any amplifier and particularly DSET. If you are building the building a multi-way horn system but build it, drive it from whatever amplifier your have now, get a good sound and good...
Romy, you have not recently spoken as much about the FR version of Melquiades as you have about the "multi-channel' versions, albeit for obvious reasons; but have you tried the FR version on, say, a ~"FR" 3-way system that makes ...

I'm working on a project that may be of interest to others, and thought posting to this old thread was a better way than beginning a new post.I use speaker level passive crossovers, between multi-amps (not DSET) and drivers. My desire is to move the...

Romy seems happy enough with his flea-powered DSET. But, again, each channel is well-matched to its task, and Romy gave a lot of thought and development time before deciding on a driver/output tube, and there was more to his decision than power requi...

Romy's recent post on the trials of 12-channel DSET hi-fi made me feel a little better, but his point about maintaining performance is well taken, none the less. One simply must have an aural reference and some rigorous methods for keeping things son...
